Qualification details:

Dr.Saeed Hamid has an MBBS degree from King Edward Medical College, Lahore; MRCP from Royal College of Physicians, London; Fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Ireland, and Fellowships of American Colleges of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He trained in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the UK and USA. He joined AKU in November 1990.

Professional recognitions & achievements

Dr. Hamid has received the SJ Zuberi Gold Medals for best papers in liver diseases from the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology, and Young Investigator Awards from Asian Pacific Association for Study of the Liver as well as Asian Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology. He was promoted to professor in 2003 and has held the positions of Medical Director &Associate Dean Clinical Affairs. Currently he holds the Chair position of the Department of Medicine.

Membership in Professional bodies:

He has been a Vice President of the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology, and currently is Secretary General of the Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases. He has been a member of the Executive Council of the Asian Pacific Association for Study of the Liver since 2005, and an active member of the American Association for the Study of the Liver since 1996.

Research and publications

Dr Hamid has nearly 80 peer reviewed publications to his credit so far, focused mainly on viral hepatitis in particular hepatitis C. He was the first to publish the clinical description of super infection of hepatitis E virus infection in patients with chronic liver disease, causing decompensation and mortality in these patients. Currently his research is focused on the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C virus infection, in particular the interaction of HCV with the host cell cycle. He has received research funding from AKU and various external agencies.
