Professor Wasim Jafri graduated from Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1977 and after completing his house job he went to England for training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.  For training in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation, he was trained at the University at Miami, Florida by Dr. Eugene Schiff.  He passed MRCP in 1982 and joined the Aga Khan University in 1987.  He is currently Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology), associate dean and head of the department of continuing professional education. He was the chair of medicine and chief of gastroenterology till 2008. He has been awarded fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow and is also Fellow of the American College of Physicians and American College of Gastroenterology.

Professor Jafri holds membership of the British Society of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, and American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, Asian-Pacific Association for Liver (APASL) and International Association for the Study of Liver. He was the Executive Council Member of the APASL. He is also the International Editor for the Davidson Textbook of Medicine and was awarded the FAIMER Fellowship by the Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) in United States for his contribution towards medical education.

He is an author of over 135 scientific manuscripts and his publications are cited in both national and international peer-reviewed journals.  He is currently also the President of the Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver.  He represents the World Congress of Gastroenterology (WCG) and is the Group Leader of their 8 training centers worldwide, and is the director of the Karachi Training Center and sits on the Educational & Training Committee of the WCG. He is also Faculty at the Train the Trainers Program of the WCG.  He is on the Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed journals, both in Hepatology and Gastroenterology.

In the field of Hepatology his main research interest is Chronic Hepatitis B and C.
